Day trip with hiking

Let go for a hike!

Norwegians love hiking, and it’s a big part of our culture. Bergen is surrounded by 7 mountains, and as a local, it’s mandatory to go hiking at least every Sunday.

Join me on a hike and let’s explore fjords, forests, and stunning viewpoints, with a dash of local stories. Put your shoes on and let’s go!

My favourite mountains in Bergen

Mount Fløyen is the “city mountain” that is easily accessible from downtown. You have probably seen photos of the popular Fløibanen funicular, which is a popular choice for those that don’t like walking. From the top, you have panoramic views of the city and the fjords of Bergen. You also find several hiking trails, a playground, and cozy cafés perfect for relaxing. Fløyen is a must-visit spot for both nature lovers and city explorers alike..

Ulriken is the highest mountain surrounding Bergen. It requires a little drive from downtown, but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Mount Ulriken is a popular choice for hikers, both locals and visitors. It’s also the start of the popular trail, “Vidden,” a hike that connects Ulriken and Fløyen. From the top of Ulriken, you have an amazing view of Bergen, not only the city but also the surrounding neighborhoods. At the top, you also find a cozy café offering panoramic views.

Sandviksfjellet is typically a mountain for the locals but offers beautiful views of the city and fjords. Nestled on its slopes is Sandviksbatteriet, a historic fort built during World War II to defend against naval attacks. The fortress stands as a powerful reminder of Bergen’s strategic importance and wartime resilience. In the area, you also find the trail Stolzekleiven, a famous competition trail. Can you beat the record time, 7 minutes and 40.9 seconds?
